So I came across this sweet log the other day. I’d like to cut a few 5" round slabs off the butt end. Does anyone have experience in keeping rounds like this from splitting? I’ve heard all sorts of crazy ideas - bury it in manure, drill a hole in the pith to allow for shrinkage, put a metal band around the outside, etc. Just wondering if anyone has practical experience. There will obviously be lots of exposed endgrain…

Time for glue up on Kelvin Scott’s workbench insert. I separated all the dovetails about 3/8" and used hide glue so things wouldn’t seize up when I knocked it back together. Good news! It all went back together just fine and I checked for square with pinch rods. Success…

Here are the door frames for Kelvin Scott’s workbench insert. The mortise and tenon joints were all cut on my Multirouter. The panels will be resawn from a single piece of figured maple. The rails and stiles also have some curl though I tried to talk Kelvin into boring straight grain. He’s a luthier so he loves curl!

All loaded up. I spent the entire day driving this over to the sawmill. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough weight on the tongue and whenever I tried going over 30mph the trailer started fish tailing violently. That’s pretty scary! 90 miles x 30pmh = long day of people upset at you and flying by. Sorry everyone…

I believe after 3 years of searching I have finally found a white oak log that will work for my next Roubo workbench. A 36" diameter log will allow me to have a 6" top that is quartersawn to keep it as stable as possible. Super excited!
