I sold the first ever Roubo bench I built and it was picked up today by Sergio on his way out to San Diego from NY. Long drive! It is going to a marketing company out in California. I hope it serves them as well as it has served me the past years. Enjoy the sun little Roubo!

In doing some work on Kelvin’s workbench cabinet today. I guess Kelvin started to varnish my cello so I need to get this finished up by the 2nd week in September. I’m thinking I can likely finish both this and also David’s workbench next week. The temperature is supposed to be a little more reasonable the next few days so that will help!

This is my current numbering system for slabs - month/year, number within the flitch (A side or B side of slab) plus the thickness…12/4 in this case. I try to take pictures of each slab (both sides) so that once it goes into the stack I have a photo record of it. I mostly work by myself and don’t have a forklift so digging through stacks of lumber is a challenge. If I can plan boards for certain projects based on pictures it helps streamline the process a bit. What does everyone else do??? I’m always looking for a better solution!

This was yesterday’s fun activity….
I had to go through and rearrange lumber stacks behind my workshop. The guys on the bottom are white oak, next is the 12/4 walnut, followed by kiln dried 4.5"x8" cherry beams and two pieces of hard maple. My helper was my Swiss friend Walter - 74 years old and lots of fun to work with!

I always like to do 1 test drawbore before assembling a workbench. This walnut joint went together great with a 1/8" offset hole. Should be good and tight for at least 100 years. One step closer to making its way to David @cupandchisel. Not sure how much more work I will do today as it is about 90 degrees in my workshop. Fans only do so much!

I brought home about 3500lbs of white oak and walnut today. In the load is the lumber for my personal white oak Roubo workbench. I was unloading things pretty quickly but the wood looked to be very nice. Almost entirely clear and very few knots. The two 6"x12" slabs for the top of the bench were cut radially from the log. This will hopefully provide the most stable slab possible short of a lamination.
I’m not going to be able to let this air dry for 6 years and then kiln dry for another year so I think I will coat the beams in some sort of oil to slow the drying process and hopefully minimize the surface checking. If anyone has done something like this please let me know. Thanks!

I did the final smoothing on the legs and stretchers for the walnut Roubo that will be headed to TX…where everything is bigger? I much prefer the look of a handplaned surface to that of sandpaper. Plus shavings are so much nicer that sawdust! 😉 I think David @cupandchisel will be pleased
