violinmaker’s traveling bench
Starting around $7000
— 12/4 (4” thick) Cherry timber w/ ebony accents
— Stainless and hidden hardware
— Hardwax Oil finish
Designed to be knocked down into six individual component parts, this bench is meant to be as stout and solid as possible, while still being extremely portable for onsite demonstrations. Made to specs for award winning luthier Kelvin Scott the overall dimensions and vise(s) can be changed to fit any specific needs.
This bench features a both quick release tail vise and a vintage quick release face vise. In order to accommodate the vises, a bent leg design reminiscent of cast iron machinery of the 19th century was incorporated into the base.
The legs are constructed from massive 12/4 solid cherry timbers, having mortise and tenon joinery drawbore pinned with ebony dowels. The legs have stub tenons which mate up with shallow mortises in the underside of the top. Threaded inserts and hardware make the connection secure and slotted holes allow for seasonal movement of the slab top.
In order to achieve a rock solid piece that is easy to break down into components for transport, hidden hardware is used throughout the bench. Stainless steel hardware and threaded inserts are used for long life. Additionally, four levelers make sure the bench will not tip/rock no matter the condition of the floor.
Your choice of domestic hardwoods - walnut, cherry or white oak, though 12/4 stock is difficult to come by so please confirm availability. It is handmade, one piece at a time and is typically completed in 8 to 10 weeks.
