These were squared up on the bandsaw, made into octagons via block plane and now getting sized through the dowel plate. Every once in awhile my wife reminds me that I have responsibilities beyond my students and furniture customers. I put up this railing around the flat roof a year ago and just finished staining it yesterday. In my defense, it’s treated lumber and I wanted to make sure it was good and dry… Directly below this roof is my teaching studio where I see young cellists and violinists. Still on the to-do list is to finish the trim work in that room. Hahahahha!

Here’s a quick shot of the cherry bench top wiped down with denatured alcohol. It has since been finished with Danish oil and the beech legs and stretchers sealed with shellac. I tried oil on a scrap piece of beech and it darkened it way too much for my taste.
The only things left to do are glue on the suede for the leg vise, size the 5/8" drawbore pins in my dowel plate and mill up the shelf boards. I should be moving this into my basement hand tool shop tomorrow piece by piece and assembling. Fun!

The RH front leg of my bench looks a bit like Swiss cheese, but I’ve decided I want to store my holdfasts on the SIDE of the leg because I’m sick of hitting my knee on them when planing stock held by the tail vise. Smart thinkin’!

I like to use a 5/8" peg for the drawbore on Roubo benches. It’s a substantial pin and makes me feel good that it will be strong forever with no glue. I will rive the pins from white oak.

Anyway, its difficult to tell, but the chop is cherry and the leg is beech. I will “age” the cherry to darken it before oiling the bench. Should look awesome!
